Saunatonttu, the Sauna Elf

In Finnish folklore, elves may be found just about everywhere. Author J.R.R Tolkien had a fascination with the Finnish language and mythology and it’s influence can be found throughout his work, most famously ‘Lord of the Rings’ first published in 1949. In Finland, one may find House elves, Barn elves, Forest elves, Water Elves, etc. Being a country with over 3 million saunas presents a lot of real estate for a little creature. Enter the Sauna Elf, aka ‘Saunatonttu’. This tiny creature is believed to dwell in the small space between the heater and the wall and is responsible for the overall experience one may have either good…or bad.

From Wikipedia: “By nature, the sauna elf is usually described as benevolent, kind-hearted and cheerful. However, the sauna elf also has a demanding side, and can even be life-threatening. For this reason, people have tried to be on good terms with their sauna elf. The sauna elf tries to ensure that people behave in a way that is appropriate to the value of the sauna. Since the sauna elf loves peace, in order to please it, people have tried to behave in the sauna like in church, i.e. avoid making noise, swearing and arguing.”

“There is no eating, drinking, urinating or farting in the sauna.” – Saunatonttu

If the sauna elf is treated well, it ensures the functionality of the sauna, the cleanliness of the sauna, the well-being and safety of the sauna users, and prevents the sauna from burning down. An angry sauna elf, on the other hand, could do many bad things, such as causing disturbances, illnesses, accidents, and deaths. A typical behavior of an angry sauna elf is a long and harsh sauna session. Deaths caused by sauna elves have been reported in many places in Finland.

I cannot personally guarantee the character of a Spiritwood Sauna elf but I can promise to make it’s new home welcome and healthy by using ethically sourced materials and craftsmanship that is sure to appease it. With proper behavior and responsible use, it should treat you with the most pleasant sauna experience that is sure to enhance your life. Just remember to go outside to release any excess gasses…
