The rules that make a good sauna experience:

  1. Feet Above Stones. Lower bench needs to be at or above the stone height.
  2. At least 7.5 foot ceilings. 8′ is better.
  3. Minimum of 2 sq’ of bench space per bather unless you like rubbing sweaty legs.
  4. Proper venting for fresh air flow and convention steam loop (Löyly).
  5. Proper insulation and vapor controls to keep your sauna efficient and long lasting.
  6. Waterproof floor with a drain for frequent sanitization.

Löyly – From Proto-Finnic *leülü, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *lewle (“spirit, soul”)

Finnish word with no direct translation in English, refers to the steam that’s generated when water is thrown onto the hot sauna stones. This steam is the life force of the Finnish sauna, altering the room’s humidity and heat, and creating the characteristic sauna sensation.
